Wrexham, North Wales’s largest town-turned-city, now draws visitors from around the world thanks to its Hollywood-owned football club — but its standout family attraction is older: a canal in the sky that UNESCO lists alongside the Great Wall of China.
Why Go
Ride a boat across the sky, tour the stadium from the TV show, and picnic at a stately home built for its servants’ stories — Wrexham mixes one world wonder with pop-culture pull, at prices that undercut every tourist honeypot in the region.
Key Sights
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct — Thomas Telford’s 1805 marvel carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the River Dee; a World Heritage Site you can float across.
Erddig — a National Trust estate unusual for telling the servants’ story as richly as the owners’, with a big adventure playground and woodland trails.
The Racecourse Ground (Wrexham AFC) — the world’s oldest international football stadium still in use; tours run regularly and match days are electric.
Llangollen heritage steam railway — vintage trains up the Dee valley from the postcard town next to the aqueduct.
Things To Do
- Take a horse-drawn or motorised canal boat across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct from Llangollen or Trevor Basin — or walk the towpath if your family has a head for heights.
- Tour the Racecourse and hunt Welcome to Wrexham filming spots around town.
- Ride the Llangollen steam train, then paddle at the riverside Victoria Promenade.
- Join a family workshop or hit the indoor play zone at Ty Pawb, the arts-and-market hall.
- Cycle the sculpture trails at Alyn Waters Country Park.
Travel Time
- From Chester: about 20 minutes by train
- From London: about 2 hours 30 minutes by train (direct services or change at Chester)
- From Manchester: about 1 hour 30 minutes by car
- City centre to the aqueduct at Trevor Basin: about 20 minutes by car or bus
Travel Route
The city centre is walkable, but the aqueduct and Llangollen need a car or short bus ride. Best single-day shape: boat across the aqueduct in the morning, Llangollen town and steam railway after lunch. Give Erddig its own half-day, and slot a stadium tour (or match, booked far ahead) around it. Chester’s Roman walls and zoo are 20 minutes away if you’re extending.
