Lisburn With Kids: Linen Story, Lagan Towpath & Hillsborough

Lisburn, just southwest of Belfast, built its fortunes on linen — a story its free museum tells well — and for families it offers one of Northern Ireland’s most relaxed days out: flat riverside paths, a royal palace’s gardens, and easy distances everywhere.

Why Go

Eleven traffic-free riverside miles for little cyclists, a royal residence with a play trail hidden in its gardens, and a lamb-feeding farm up the road — Lisburn is the gentle, low-cost counterweight to Belfast’s big-ticket days.

Key Sights

Hillsborough Castle and Gardens — the royal residence in Northern Ireland, ten minutes away: 100 acres of gardens with the Lost Garden play trail, plus state-room tours for families who want them.

Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum — free, with working hand-looms, weaving demonstrations, and tactile handling collections.

Lagan Valley Regional Park — the flat towpath between Lisburn and Belfast, Northern Ireland’s best easy family cycle.

Wallace Park — the Victorian park with a large playground, duck pond, and miniature railway rides on summer Sundays.

Things To Do

  • Cycle or scoot the Lagan towpath toward Belfast — locks, meadows, herons, and a café stop at the Lock Keeper’s Cottage.
  • Feed the lambs and ride the tractor trailer at Streamvale Open Farm, a dependable under-8s hit.
  • Follow the Lost Garden trail at Hillsborough, then picnic by the lake.
  • Watch a weaving demonstration and try the loom shuttles at the Linen Centre.
  • Catch the miniature railway in Wallace Park on a summer Sunday.

Travel Time

  • From Belfast: about 20 minutes by train
  • From Belfast International Airport: about 25 minutes by car
  • Town centre to Hillsborough Castle: about 10 minutes by car
  • Lagan towpath to Belfast: about 11 miles, flat, by bike

Travel Route

The train from Belfast drops you in the walkable town centre — museum and Wallace Park need no wheels. Hillsborough and Streamvale each need a short drive or taxi, so the practical split is: town plus towpath one day, Hillsborough plus the farm the next. Cyclists can make the towpath the journey itself, riding out from Belfast and taking the train back.
