Perth (Scotland) With Kids: Scone Palace & the Stone of Destiny

Perth — the Scottish original, on the River Tay — is a compact, good-natured stop between Edinburgh and the Highlands, and since 2024 it holds a genuine national treasure: the Stone of Destiny, returned to the city where Scottish kings were crowned.

Why Go

The place where Scotland crowned its kings now shows off the actual coronation stone for free, and the palace where it happened has a maze, peacocks, and picnic lawns. Perth is the easiest history lesson in Scotland to disguise as a fun day out.

Key Sights

Scone Palace — the crowning place of Macbeth and Robert the Bruce, with the bits kids actually love: a star-shaped hedge maze, roaming peacocks, and grounds with a playground.

Perth Museum — free, purpose-built around the Stone of Destiny in a dramatic central chamber, with unicorn-themed exhibits charming younger visitors.

Kinnoull Hill — a 45-minute family climb to a folly tower on cliffs above the Tay, with one of lowland Scotland’s best viewpoints.

Branklyn Garden — a small National Trust garden famous for Himalayan blue poppies; a calm short stop.

Things To Do

  • Lose each other (deliberately) in Scone’s Murray Star Maze, then find the peacocks.
  • Cycle or scoot the flat riverside paths of North Inch park, keeping an eye out for the Tay’s resident beavers upstream at dusk.
  • Try the hands-on activities at Perth Museum’s family sessions, then find the unicorn trail.
  • Swim or soft-play at Perth Leisure Pool — the region’s rainy-day standby, with flumes and a lagoon.
  • Detour to The Black Watch Castle and Museum for regiments, redcoats, and dressing-up boxes.

Travel Time

  • From Edinburgh: about 1 hour 15 minutes by train
  • From Glasgow: about 1 hour by train
  • From Dundee: about 25 minutes by train
  • City centre to Scone Palace: 10 minutes by car or a short bus ride

Travel Route

Perth sits at Scotland’s rail crossroads — Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Inverness all run direct — so it works as a day trip or an overnight on the way north. Do the museum and riverside in the morning, Scone Palace after lunch, and Kinnoull Hill if legs allow; everything central is flat and walkable.
