Bangor is a small cathedral and university city whose value for families is entirely about position: Snowdonia’s mountains on one side, Anglesey’s beaches across the strait, and two of Wales’s greatest castles within twenty minutes.
Why Go
Nowhere in Britain puts a family closer to this combination: the highest mountain in Wales, fantasy-film castles, the world’s fastest zip line, and island beaches — all within half an hour of one base with a railway station.
Key Sights
Caernarfon Castle — the mightiest of Edward I’s ring of castles, with towers and wall-walks that keep kids exploring for hours.
Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) — climb the Llanberis Path with fit kids over 8, or take the mountain railway up and walk down; book the train months ahead in summer.
Penrhyn Castle — a colossal neo-Norman pile (National Trust) with an industrial railway museum in the stables and one of the Trust’s best adventure playgrounds.
Bangor Garth Pier — the restored Victorian pier reaching halfway across the Menai Strait, with mountain views.
Things To Do
- Fly Velocity 2 at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry — the world’s fastest zip line — or bounce the underground trampolines of Bounce Below for kids under the zip-line minimums.
- Beach day at Newborough on Anglesey: huge sands, dunes, and views back to the mountains.
- Ride the Ffestiniog or Welsh Highland heritage steam railways through the mountains.
- Walk a stretch of the Wales Coast Path along the Menai Strait, crossing Telford’s 1826 suspension bridge.
- Explore Conwy’s walled town and castle, 35 minutes east, as a second castle day.
Travel Time
- From London: about 3 hours 15 minutes by direct train
- From Manchester: about 2 hours by train or car
- Bangor to Caernarfon: 20 minutes by bus or car
- Bangor to the Snowdon railway at Llanberis: about 25 minutes by car
Travel Route
Arrive by train (Bangor is the region’s rail hub), but plan on a car for the week — castles, Zip World sites, and Anglesey beaches all sit in different directions. A balanced five-day shape: Caernarfon, Snowdon, Zip World, an Anglesey beach day, and Penrhyn Castle with the pier for the wind-down day. The Sherpa’r Wyddfa buses circle Snowdon’s trailheads if you’d rather not drive mountain roads.
