Aberdeen With Kids: Beach, Science Centre & Castle Country

Aberdeen, the granite city of Scotland’s northeast, is less a sightseeing destination than a comfortable family base: a long sandy beach on the doorstep, a good wet-weather science centre, and some of Scotland’s most dramatic castles within an hour.

Why Go

Beach mornings, castle afternoons, and dolphin-spotting from the harbour wall — Aberdeen combines seaside-town simplicity with a hinterland of fairy-tale fortresses, and the long northern summer daylight stretches every day further.

Key Sights

Aberdeen Beach and Codona’s — two miles of sand backed by an old-school amusement park with rides, adventure golf, and indoor play.

Dunnottar Castle — 35 minutes south near Stonehaven: a ruined fortress on a sea cliff that kids remember for years; the region’s one unmissable outing.

Aberdeen Science Centre — compact but genuinely hands-on, with an energy gallery leaning into the city’s offshore heritage.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum — free, built around a nine-metre oil-rig model, with ships and submarines enough for kids.

Things To Do

  • Wander Footdee (Fittie), the quirky former fishing village of tiny cottages at the harbour mouth, and watch for dolphins off the breakwater in early evening.
  • Explore the free tropical glasshouses and big playground at Duthie Park’s Winter Gardens.
  • Build a second castle day around pink fairy-tale Craigievar and Crathes with its adventure playground.
  • Take the Royal Deeside route toward Balmoral for a Highland-lite drive with river picnics.
  • Ride the miniature railway and pedal boats at Hazlehead Park on a fine morning.

Travel Time

  • From Edinburgh: about 2 hours 30 minutes by train
  • From Glasgow: about 2 hours 40 minutes by train
  • From London: about 1 hour 30 minutes by air (or 7+ hours by train)
  • City centre to Dunnottar Castle: about 35 minutes by car, or train to Stonehaven plus a clifftop walk

Travel Route

Stay near the beach esplanade for easy mornings, then structure days as one city block (science centre, maritime museum, Footdee) and one castle outing. A car unlocks the best of the region — Dunnottar, Craigievar, and Deeside all sit in different directions — though the Stonehaven train plus coastal path reaches Dunnottar car-free.
