Glasgow With Kids: Kelvingrove, Riverside Museum & Science Centre

Glasgow has the best collection of free family museums in Scotland — better than Edinburgh’s, locals will tell you — and hotel prices that undercut the capital by a wide margin, making it a smart base for families doing Scotland on a budget.

Why Go

Trams you can board, a Spitfire hanging from a museum ceiling, Highland cows ten minutes from downtown — Glasgow delivers Scotland’s richest free family programme with the friendliest big-city welcome in the country.

Key Sights

Riverside Museum — the Zaha Hadid-designed transport museum, free, with trams and locomotives to climb aboard, a recreated 1900s street, and the Tall Ship Glenlee moored outside (also free).

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum — free, famous for Sir Roger the elephant and the Spitfire over the natural history hall; catch the daily organ recital at 1pm (3pm Sundays).

Glasgow Science Centre — three floors of hands-on exhibits on the Clyde, plus a planetarium and the rotating Glasgow Tower; the paid anchor, worth a half-day.

Pollok Country Park — Highland cows and woodland trails inside the city, with the Burrell Collection (free) for a culture stop.

Things To Do

  • Ride the Subway — the 15-stop circle locals call the Clockwork Orange — as an attraction in its own right.
  • Visit the People’s Palace on Glasgow Green and let kids loose in the neighbouring play village.
  • Walk or cycle the Kelvin Walkway between Kelvingrove and the Botanic Gardens’ glasshouses.
  • Catch a family show at the Citizens or a science demo at the Science Centre.
  • Day-trip to Loch Lomond’s southern shore, 45 minutes away, for a loch cruise and the Sea Life aquarium at Balloch.

Travel Time

  • From London: about 4 hours 30 minutes by train, or 1 hour 20 minutes by air
  • From Edinburgh: about 50 minutes by train
  • From Stirling: about 40 minutes by train
  • Airport to city centre: 15 minutes by bus

Travel Route

Base in the West End near Kelvingrove for leafy streets and easy museum access. Day one: Kelvingrove and Kelvin Walkway. Day two: Riverside Museum and the Tall Ship, then the Science Centre across the river. Day three: Pollok’s Highland cows or the Loch Lomond trip. The Subway links the West End and centre; most museums cluster near its stops.
